To The Person Who Stepped Out Of Character…
The human connection. While it is one of the strongest forces that exists, it comes with challenges when trying to cultivate it. Oftentimes we allow our misunderstandings to interfere with our ability to connect with one another. Whether in our professional or personal lives, these differences in perspectives have the ability to affect us in ways that can be regrettable if internalized and projected. When placed in this situation:
Never let the unfavorable actions of others alter the positive characteristics of you.
This does not necessarily mean the loss of your temper, but a reaction or choice that is different from your typical norm. Our character is the most valuable thing we could ever own, so why do so many of us choose differently during times that our positive traits are needed the most? Who you are and what you stand for matters and although it can be difficult to keep the integrity of our character together during challenging times, with mental discipline, it can be achieved.
Here are some tips for when you feel like your character has been tested:
Change your perspective. While we can’t always control the situations that surround us, we can control the way that we perceive them.
Situation —> Feeling/Thought —> Action —> Result
The most important mention in the diagram above is the feeling/thought. They are what drive your actions and results, not the situation. If they are negative, re-frame them.
Recognize the role you played when you internalized the specific situation. It’s okay to be frustrated when challenged; this is an appropriate and healthy feeling. How you handle your frustration is a different matter. Process with someone (and with yourself) about your thoughts and intentions of your desired outcome.
Remember who you are…and show them. There are qualities and traits about you that are absolutely amazing. Show them that. These are the things that promote and inspire change.
Bonus tip: If you had a moment where you acted out of character, acknowledge it, take responsibility, and move on with grace. We all make mistakes and will continue to do so throughout our lives. How you learn from those mistakes is what enhances your character and position to grow. Sometimes what you thought was a step backward, is actually an opportunity to accelerate forward.
