Self-Care Tips for Intentional Adulting
Adulting. The word in itself sounds heavy! I see it as an involuntary way of life with expectations to produce and provide simply for the sake of survival. Unfortunately there is no blueprint, no manual, no guide. The only thing true is your internal motivation to just push through. So with adulting already being exhausting, what happens when a person makes the conscious effort to surpass the standard obligations? I like to call that intentional adulting.
Intentional adulting is all about pushing yourself past limits that you may not have known you were truly capable of. Challenging yourself to purposely push through to achieve specific goals in your life. Consciously aware that the journey will challenge you and test your limits. Intentional adulting is a big deal. You, my friend, are a big deal.
Know that so many of us understand and can relate to what you are going through: the fluctuation of excitement and exhaustion. The days where you want to do everything and the days where you want to do nothing. The moments where you’re smiling on the outside but secretly doubting yourself on the inside. The sleepless nights. The days you have no clue how you’re going to get the job done or even find the resources. The moments you’re in awe when you see the fruits of your labor come to fruition.
My advice to you: keep pushing through…but take care of yourself too. Another component of intentional adulting is keeping yourself regulated. That’s how you’ll truly reach and accomplish your goals. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when meeting your own needs:
Physical
If your body is shutting down, let it. That means it needs to rest and re-charge. Let your body take the lead instead of your mind. You’ll thank yourself for it.
Check in with your PCP or holistic practitioner. Sometimes the stress that we are feeling is actually connected to health ailments that may be masking itself.
Stay hydrated and commit to having at least one healthy meal a day.
Get some movement in your routine to boost the chemicals that make you feel good.
Mental
Check in with yourself. How are you really feeling?
Set intentions for the day you want to have and prioritize positivity.
Rest, even when you can’t sleep.
Emotional
Once you check in with yourself, feel + experience that emotion
Connect with people who can relate. You are not alone.
Come to therapy, transparency is so healing.
Live life on your own terms to reduce the feelings of unnecessary pressure from others.
As always, please be well, we’re rooting for you!
